One Murder at a Time: The Casebook of Lindsey & Plum
Published in Paperback by Wildside Pr (October, 2001)

Very welcome collection
How did this one slip past me!It was wonderful to see that Mr. Lupoff hasn't forgotten about Bert and Marvia. I really enjoyed these stories, separate though they were, I kept hoping these two guys would cross paths. When they eventually did, in "Old folks at Home," I was surprised, and intrigued, at how cleverly the reader was manipulated into expecting (and not getting of course) to see a more personal glimpse into their first encounter since the split up. I was disappointed, but it definitely made me anxious for their next mystery together. If you haven't read the series, you're really missing something. I'm holding my breath, Mr. Lupoff

Excellent BookThis book is just simply fabulous. It is hilarious and the two twins are perfect characters for the book. Gordon Korman did an excellent job writing this book. I can't believe how magnificently written this book was. This book is and always will be one of my favorite books.
Side-Splitting Funny; a laugh you won't want to put down.Gordon Korman twists a tale of intruige around a hysterically funny plot. A must read for spy buffs and comedy fans alike. If you liked MacDonald Hall, then you'll love this book.

Real Life Voice for TeensI read this book and immediately completed all the paperwork and the review process that would add this book to the library of our Alternative Education school. My students commented after the first chapter, "Now this is the real thing. This boy has been out there." Laura Moe offers a voice that captures the thoughts of a boy, lost from the many turns of a painful childhood, searching for the intersection of the past and the promise of the future. This story offers a current view of the lives of youth on the edge that goes beyond the layers that were pulled back by The Outsiders and Homecoming.
Coyote Gordon creates a cast of characters that are real.Coyote Gordon writes about real characters working through real problems. As a teenager it is not always easy to understand that everybody has his or her own set of problems to deal with and Nick seems to have greater than his fair share. His father dies, his mother is put away in a mental institution and he lives in more foster homes than he can count. Not only that, but he misses his little brother. He knows a lot about the other side of the tracks and not fitting in. He figures that he's totally on his own and is due in for life of just getting by. All that changes when he meets the right foster parents and an English teacher offeres him a way to open up and let the pain out by writing a journal and having a trusted friend to share it with.

Parenting Your Parents: Support Strategies for Meeting the Challenge of Aging in the Family
Published in Paperback by Dundurn Press, Ltd. (01 May, 2002)
Average review score:

Very useful and realistic information!Since my own parents have been experiencing a decline in their health during recent years, I have been looking for a valuable source of information on how to help them live life as best they can, and what coping skills I can use for my own life. This book proved extremely valuable in both these areas. I highly recommend it to anybody of the baby boomer generation, who may have aging parents. Even great for those whose parents are not yet showing declines in health... best be prepared! I refernce this book very often, still.
Dave's CommentsSimilar to other baby boomers, my parents are starting to show signs of aging. Fortunately they are both in good health and my brother and I haven't had to deal with many situations that can result from aging parents. Many of my friends have had to deal with these issues and it has been very difficult for them.
Parenting your Parents is an excellent book for anyone that is dealing with aging parents or may have to in the future. It has many examples of typical situations and offers practical advice and support. There are also many lessons for people of all ages, for many of us will be facing the same issues as we age.
The most powerful part of the book is the last section when one of the authors discusses problems he is addressing with his parents. It is very emotional and is an excellent way to end an excellent book.

Peaceable Witness Among Muslims
Published in Paperback by Herald Pr (15 December, 1999)
Average review score:

Illustrative, ancedotal, inspiring, compassionate reading. In Peaceable Witness Among Muslims offers a timely correction to Christian misperceptions of Islam as a monolithic movement. The focus is on providing the Islamic communities with a Christian presentation and witness that neither denigrates nor alienates Muslim cultural traditions and belief systems, but offers a compassionate affirmation of Christian beliefs appropriate to followers of the Koran. The anecdotal stories are especially illustrative and compelling. Peaceable Witness Among Muslims should be required reading of anyone seeking to bear an effective Christian testament to an Islamic friend or community.
A Peacable Witness Among MuslimsAlthough I have yet to read this book. I have heard from several who have bought it. They have enjoyed it and recomend it. I have also had numerous insightful conversations with the author and am sure that I will enjoy the book when I finally buy it.

Power Copywriting: Dynamic New Communications Techniques to Help You Sell More Products and Services
Published in Paperback by Dartnell Corp (August, 1994)
Average review score:

A Perfect Book for the Professional Copywriter in your Life!I work in the creative department of a New York based advertising agency whose name most in the business would instantly recognize. Lewis's book was recommended to me as an interesting and valuable read. I bought it and found it immensely helpful. Wonderful! Not sure why more people in the "biz" don't know about it! I wholeheartedly agree with the review that appears above....this is an exquisite book. THIS is the book they should be using in graduate level communications courses. On the other hand, forget it. I want to keep my job! A TRUE GEM OF A BOOK - GET IT!
A GREAT BOOK FOR INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED COPYWRITERSLet me say right from the beginning that I have been writing copy for more than a dozen years. Everything from broadcast to direct mail. And after you read all the essential classics in the field (and those copywriting for less than 5 years MUST first read the classics by Bly, Caples, Ogilvy, and yes Lewis too) I can't think of any other book better suited than this one for refining and fine tuning the more experienced copywriter! Power Copywriting takes us on a wonderful journey through the refinements of the copywriting craft. Things professionals have always instinctively known but LOVE seeing corroborated in print - and - things we've perhaps never considered and will try FIRST THING TOMORROW! Very little actual narrative. It's just pages and pages of sophisticated tips, secrets, and wisdom served to you in bite size chunks. A book not really meant for the novice because it presumes the reader can really tell the difference between a feature and a benefit and already understands all the basics. This book BUILDS UPON the basics. To stay sharp, I've read this book twice a year since I've purchased it. I've seen my copywriting "pull" significantly better after reading Lewis' Power and so will you. If you've already read the classics and have more than 4 or 5 years experience in copywriting - GET THIS BOOK!
Dick Lupoff's one helluva writer and I've always liked the stories of Marvia Plum and Hobart Lindsay, and as a former Berkeley resident, I appreciate the settings of these stories. Several appeared in Mysterious Intent magazine (where yours truly was a regular writer) and Dick contributed some of these stories for the first time. It's about time they were collected too.
One standout story that was new to me was "News from New Providence", a story set in the Bahamas, where Marvia's father Marcus appears. It's a story featuring a, well, an unnamed Duke and Duchess, who are shown to be as self-absorbed and snobby as I always thought from what I read. The familiar themes of collecting and the odd folks who often collect rare objects appear in several of the stories, and Lupoff's sure hand and sure knowledge of history show up everywhere; especially in two stories created for this collection: "Golden Glory" which has to do with a favorite topic of radio, and "Old Folks at Home", which revisits memories of Nazi Germany.
Alas, the "bonus story" was not to my taste, but that's not that it is a bad story. It's that, sorry folks, but I am not in any way a Nero Wolfe fan and it really helps to read this story featuring agoraphobic rose mavin Caligula Foxx. That hardly matters overall in this collection. Timmy in "Chinese Gunboats" - a sensitive an fascinating story that deals with an autistic man who knows whodunnit and tells Marvia about it in his own way.
One final note: I know that the author is truly pleased with this publisher. They've done a pretty good job, but I can't get excited about the interior illustrations. I think they're that combination of art and computer and they didn't work for me. However, the cover is truly wonderful. I think it shows off well Lindsey's slightly nebbishy qualities and Marvia's forthright cop nature. A welcome book in our household....
